In 2023, Conbit successfully replaced three flare tips for Chevron. This page is dedicated to providing information about these three projects and the collaboration between Chevron and Conbit. All three flare tip replacements took place offshore Angola and each project had its unique characteristics.
These projects followed the successful antenna removal at Chevron's Cabinda facility in the summer of 2022.
One of the projects involved the replacement of flare tips at the Sanha platform. This was the first project in the trilogy and required a pitstop shutdown. The flare tip replacement was a critical aspect of this pitstop, and the project team consisted of Chevron's project manager and Conbit's team. To facilitate the replacement, a gantry type lifting system was used to directly lift the flare tips to and from a supply vessel.
Despite some challenges, valuable lessons were learned, including the importance of visa processes and logistics, the need to challenge clients for accurate information, and the standby support from engineers at Conbit headquarters.
The case study can be found here.
"The project I was workingon together with the people of Conbit was on the critical path of the shutdown.Conbit understands the importance of time. They know how to mitigate risks andguarantee safety, and still meet the tight shutdown deadline.” ~ Don Whitley, Project Manager, CABGOC
The BBLT platform also required flare tip replacements, along with the removal of two degraded davits. Conbit utilized the same equipment used in the previous project. The main technical challenge was fitting the lifting systems on the wide, yet small, flare tip access platform. To optimize efficiency during the short shutdown window, Conbit aimed to use a single system for all lifts.
“Conbit team excelled in every area and adapted quickly to the difficult transportation setup between living quarters and site. Also handled the delay with the weld build up and was still able to exceed expectations on the timing. Very professional team that handled all difficult situations very well.”
Valuable lessons from this project included the importance of thorough inspection of stored flare tips and the inclusion of daily crew logistics in project preparation to influence project duration.
“Conbit’s detailed planning and experienced crew ensured the complicated offshore lift went smoothly and safely. I would highly recommend them and look forward to working with them again on future flare tip replacements.” ~ Matthew Johnson, Project Manager - Chevron Angola
At the time of writing, our crew is scheduled to mobilize in two weeks for the GIP-H flare tip replacement project. This section will be updated with the latest project results and lessons learned.
Conbit is actively involved in the planning phase of several offshore lifting projects in collaboration with Chevron. We highly value Chevron's appreciation for the power of preparation and continuously improve our project approach. Our commitment is to bring our lifting expertise to Chevron projects worldwide.
